PM Narendra Modi to visit Ram Mandir foundation event in Ayodhya, Opposition row intensifies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Ayodhya to attend the foundation of the Ram temple at the formerly disputed site. The rituals set to be held include ‘bhoomi pujan’ following which the construction of the temple will begin. Reports of the visit have sparked a political row between the BJP ruled Centre and the opposition on the legitimacy of the visit, as the opposition claims that the government is giving priority to religion amid an economic crisis and COVID-19 pandemic. The opposition, in particular, the NCP chief Sharad Pawar have criticised the decision of the Prime Minister to visit the ceremony.

The BJP has responded to the allegations of the Opposition and has said that it is trying to politicise the PM’s visit in a bid to hide its own failures and divert the attention of the people from the COVID crisis.
