Rising animosity between Beijing and Washington escalated this week, when U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared China’s maritime claims in the South China Sea “completely unlawful.” China criticized the U.S., saying the statement aggravates tensions and “defies China and ASEAN countries’ efforts to safeguard the stability and peace.” Why is the U.S. intruding? Does this mark a change in its South China Sea policy, or its China policy as a whole? If so, where are China-U.S. relations heading?
