A giant salamander recently discovered in the Jinsha River in Yibin, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, is the largest found over the last decade in the region. Critically endangered in the wild, it is under second-class protection in China. It is believed that the species has inhabited the Earth’s fresh waters for 165 million years, making it a “living fossil” in the animal kingdom.
