Mounting evidence suggests the novel coronavirus was present elsewhere in the world before it surfaced in China, an Oxford expert said in an interview. Tom Jefferson, an honorary senior research fellow at Oxford’s England-based Center for Evidence Based Medicine, says recent findings have shown that the virus widely existed around the world before it became a pandemic. Traces of the virus have been discovered in sewage samples from Brazil, Italy and Spain pre-dating its emergence in China. Last week, Spanish virologists announced they found traces of the disease in waste water samples collected in March 2019 – nine months before the virus was detected in China’s Hubei Province.
