US President Donald Trump fanned the flames of US culture wars over the coronavirus and racism in a divisive speech to Americans celebrating Independence Day. The president spoke at the White House during a patriotic 4th of July tribute. Hundreds of guests gathered there for a picnic, most not wearing masks. Thousands of others converged on the capital to watch a fireworks display and military flyover. But across the nation, anti-racism protests and the coronavirus muted what normally are festive celebrations. More than 52,000 people were diagnosed on Friday. Despite the soaring numbers, Trump said the US was close to defeating the virus.
