Two people were shot dead and seven others injured on Thursday when soldiers opened fire on mourners wanting to attend the funeral of popular Ethiopian musician and activist Haacaaluu Hundeessaa.
Security was high in the Ethiopian town of Ambo ahead of the funeral of Hundeessaa, whose killing in Addis Ababa earlier this week sparked two days of protests that left more than 90 people dead.
The farewell ceremony had begun with well-wishers laying wreaths in Ambo stadium and mourning the death of the 34-year-old musician from the ethnic Oromo group, Ethiopia’s largest. He was laid to rest at a church in Ambo, some 100km (60 miles) west of the capital.
