Time and again one or the other medicine is claimed to be effective in treating COVID-19 by politicians. Initially, the medical fraternity debated the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). HCQ also became the subject of international diplomatic rifts with countries manufacturing them in large quantities banning the export of the medicine. In recent times, a lot of discussions have been around remdesivir, a drug developed by Gilead Sciences. Even though the drug is not a cure for coronavirus, how is it effective in treating the disease? Dr Arun Sanyal, professor of Internal Medicine in VCU School of Medicine speaks to Ravish Kumar about why the drug is currently being used on critically ill COVID-19 patients and how it helps in their recovery.
