In a burst of bright colours and sequins, over 12,000 participants across almost 200 floats took part in Sydney’s annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. In its 42nd year, hundreds of thousands gathered to watch groups including the CSIRO, the ABC, and Fire and Rescue NSW march down Oxford Street. The theme of this year’s Mardi Gras was ‘What Matters’, which organisers say is designed to shed light on the event’s history of protest.
