Tang Ping-keung, commissioner of police of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said the police will take both “hard” and “soft” approaches when dealing with protesters.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing on Saturday afternoon, Tang said police will not tolerate violent acts and resolute actions will be taken against protesters, while humanistic and more flexiable approaches will be used to minor incidents.

The new HKSAR police commissioner is currently on his first visit to Beijing since he took office last month. He will return to Hong Kong on Sunday.
