Hong Kong’s chief executive has strongly criticized the U-S legislation in support of protesters in the Chinese special administrative region.
Carrie Lam added that the U-S legislation could undermine business confidence in Hong Kong. The law, approved by U-S President Donald Trump, has further escalated tensions between Washington and Beijing. On Monday, China banned American military ships and aircraft from visiting Hong Kong. It also sanctioned several American N-G-Os in retaliation for the two pieces of legislation. Beijing said Washington should stop interfering in China’s internal affairs. Hong Kong has witnessed months of anti-Beijing protests, which have repeatedly descended into violent stand-offs with the police. Beijing says the violence is backed mainly by the U-S and the U-K and is aimed at destabilizing mainland China.
