Residents of Turramurra on Sydney’s north shore are cleaning up after bright pink fire retardant rained down on the suburb.

A Rural Fire Service plane was diverted to the area to help douse a fire during the New South Wales fire emergency.

Experts say fire retardant like that used in Turramurra is an integral part of firefighting.
