A high court judge has recorded the statement of a teen, who has accused a former legislator from India’s Uttar Pradesh state of rape, at a hospital where she has been admitted since she met with a car accident.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was then a legislator of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is accused of raping the girl in 2017 when she was 15 years old. He is also accused of the murder of the teen’s father who was a witness in the case and of planning the so-called road accident in which the girl was injured critically.
The trial is one of many sexual assault cases in India that has caused public outrage. The kidnap and rape of an eight-year-old girl in 2018 drew angry nationwide protests.
Figures from 2016 show 40,000 rape cases were registered in the country, an average of about 100 a day.
Mihira Sood, a Supreme Court lawyer in New Delhi, talks to Al Jazeera about the significance of the court case and the country’s apparent culture of impunity when it comes to rape.
