Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has won a surprise re-election, after opposition leader, Bill Shorten, conceded defeat.
Exit polls had favoured the Labor Party but, despite significant gains in New South Wales and Victoria, Mr Shorten’s bid to become Australia’s sixth prime minister in six years fell short.
With just over 70% of votes now counted, Scott Morrison’s Liberal Party and its coalition partners are just shy of what they need for a majority – but the Labor party has already conceded defeat.
